But with some areas of the world in quarantine and the rest in uncertainty about the spread of coronavirus, now might not be the best time to think about teaching English abroad. With that being said, if you have your heart set on it or already have travel plans, it’s definitely still doable. Just make sure you’re keeping up to date with the news and only travelling to places deemed as safe.

What other options do I have?

What do I need to teach English online?

A TEFL certificate, a laptop, a headset, a webcam and strong internet connection – that’s it! Some agencies might specify you need to have a degree, but there are lots that don’t. If you don’t have a degree, you can apply with agencies such as Cambly, PalFish and iTalki.

How much can I earn?

Salaries for teaching English online vary hugely depending on how many students you have in your class, the type of English you teach and who you work for! If you work freelance you can decide your rates of pay which is great, but it’s often easier to get started with an agency. If you were to teach general conversational English on a one-to-one basis you could earn upwards of £10+ per lesson, with lessons generally lasting around 1 hour.
