The main difference between our online TEFL courses and combined TEFL courses, is that when you opt to study your TEFL certification online, you’ll do all your TEFL learning via our online learning platform. If you choose a combined TEFL course, you’ll have a blend of online studying and an additional 20 hours of classroom-based learning.
If you live within a reasonable distance of any of our worldwide training venues, we recommend taking a combined TEFL course or diploma. Our combined TEFL qualification includes a 20-hour classroom TEFL course. When you come to apply for jobs, any course that includes classroom-based learning is favoured by employers around the world, as it proves you’ve already had some experience teaching in a classroom-setting. It also gives you the chance to ask lots of questions, network with fellow TEFL newbies and even practise teaching and get expert feedback before stepping into the classroom.
If you’d rather study TEFL online, or if you can’t attend a classroom course – don’t worry! At i-to-i, we only provide accredited TEFL courses, so you’ll still get top quality training with support from our in-house tutors and excellent online TEFL training that’s going to get you wherever you want to be!
This all depends on how many hours each day/week you can commit to studying and the length of the course you choose. The average time it takes our students to complete each of our courses is:
Online TEFL Course (120 Hours): 2 – 4 weeks
Online TEFL Course (180 Hours): 4 – 6 weeks
Online TEFL Course (300 Hours): 8 – 10 weeks
Combined TEFL Course (140 Hours): 2 to 4 weeks
Combined TEFL Course (200 Hours): 4 to 6 weeks
Combined TEFL Course (320 Hours): 8 – 10 weeks
With so much choice and a huge amount of information online, navigating the world of TEFL courses can be a tricky place and it can be difficult to know which TEFL certification is best for you.
Firstly, you’ll need to make sure you choose a TEFL course provider who’s internationally recognised and is regulated by a governing body. This ensures the training you receive is of the highest quality and your TEFL qualification will be highly regarded and accepted by employers worldwide. All of our TEFL courses, online and combined, are regulated by Ofqual, the UK Governing body responsible for monitoring TEFL qualifications. Not only that, but we’re also accredited by ODLQC. If you want to find out more about what this means, we have lots of information you can access by clicking here.

If you have completed one of our online TEFL courses (120 Hours or 180 Hours) or one of our combined TEFL courses (140 Hours or 200 Hours), you’ll receive an i-to-i TEFL Certificate. If you have opted to study our Online TEFL Diploma (300 Hours) or our Combined TEFL Diploma (320 Hours), then you’ll get a diploma certificate. This qualification is the same level as the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL course qualifications.

Our TEFL courses are designed for those who haven’t studied grammar since they were at school (most of us)! It’s not everyone’s favourite subject, but if you’re a native English speaker, you already have a natural understanding of grammar – it’s all about turning that knowledge into teachable rules – that’s where our TEFL training comes in!
So, whether you’re a native speaker or simply fluent in English, our TEFL courses will help you feel totally confident when it comes to taking your first grammar class.
With all our TEFL courses, both online and combined, you’ll be qualified to apply for TEFL jobs abroad or to teach English online, to adults and children of any age. When you choose to study either our Online TEFL Course (180 Hours) or our Online TEFL Diploma (300 Hours), you’ll get access to our specialist TEFL courses, which are super handy if you want to be TEFL trained in a particular area.
Within our Level 5 courses (180/200/300/320 Hours), we offer up to three Specialist Courses: How to Teach Young Leaners, Teaching One-to-One & Online and How to Teach Business English. These will prepare you for specific teaching situations. Plus, being qualified in specific TEFL areas will increase your earning potential!
We are the only TEFL provider to offer these Specialist Courses at Level 5, which will make your CV stand out to future employers. If you’ve opted for one of our Level 5 TEFL qualifications, you’ll naturally have a greater pick of TEFL jobs on offer as you’ll be qualified to a higher level than if you choose a Level 3 course.
You will need to be over the age of 18 to complete any of our TEFL courses. We often get asked “Am I too old to TEFL?” Our answer: definitely not! We’ve trained teachers of all ages that have built successful TEFL careers, both online and across the globe. Check out some of their stories here!
You don’t need to be a native English speaker to take a TEFL course, but you do need to have a native English speaker level to succeed. If you aren’t a native English speaker, we recommend you opt for our 120 Hour TEFL course (you can always upgrade later), unless your standard of English is near-native.
If you want to chat to one of our friendly TEFL experts to figure out which TEFL course is best for you, then you can request a call back.
The short answer is no! You only need to be able to speak English fluently to take a TEFL course or diploma – we’ll train you on the rest. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, this isn’t a requirement for any of our qualifications and you can teach English online and abroad without one. If you don’t have a degree, our advice would be to take our Online TEFL Diploma (300 Hours) to boost your employment potential and give yourself the best chance of bagging a great TEFL job!
