FAQs: Answered

  • Q: Should I take the Level 5 or the Level 3 300 Hour Course?

This all depends on how you want to use your qualification. If you want access to better prospects, higher paying positions and more benefits, we’d always recommend taking a Level 5 Course.

  • Q: How much English grammar should I already know before taking the course?

You don’t need to be an expert in grammar, the course will teach you everything you need to know in that area. Plus, you already speak English – so you already know it! You just don’t know you know it.

  • Q: Can I take the course if I’m not a native English speaker?

Yes – you don’t have to be a native English speaker to teach English abroad but you'll need to have at least a near-native level of English to take one of our Level 5 Courses. If your English is good but not at a near-native level, why not take a look at our range of Level 3 Courses instead?

  • Q: What qualifications do I need to teach English abroad?

You don’t need any qualifications, other than TEFL, to teach online or abroad. A few countries may ask for a bachelor’s degree for visa purposes but there are many, many places you can teach without a degree!

  • Q: Who are Ofqual and what do they do?

Ofqual – or the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation – are a department of the UK Government who assess qualifications to make sure they hit the criteria that shows they qualify as legitimate certifications. They regulate all of our top TEFL Courses and you can see i-to-i on their register here.

  • Q: How long do I get to complete the course?

To complete the 180 hours of essential training, you'll get 120 days.

For the 60-hour Specialist Courses, you'll get 35 days for each one. In the Level 5 300 Hour Online TEFL Diploma, there are 2x 60-hour Specialist Courses so this would be 70 days.

    120 + 70 = 190 days in total.

  • Q: Does this Course include any in-class training?

The Level 5 300 Hour Diploma in TEFL doesn’t include any classroom learning but we do offer a Level 5 320 Hour Diploma in TEFL which has all of the same content as the 300 but it also includes our 20 Hour Classroom TEFL Course. We’d always recommend taking some in-class training if you can attend one of the dates and locations on offer as this will make you a stronger candidate when you’re applying for TEFL jobs.

  • Q: Do I need any equipment for the course?

As this is an online course, you do need to have an Internet connection and a suitable device to study on (laptop, desktop, tablet or phone). You will also need to have a media player on the device, as the course includes a number of short observational films and tutorials.

  • Q: Do I need to have Word to take the course?

You do not need Word for any of the course material. We do recommend that you use Word to complete the assessed assignments. However, it is possible to download the assignment template into Google docs, edit it there and then upload your work if required.

  • Q: Do I need to purchase any textbooks for the course?

No, all of the content is provided within the online learning platform.

  • Q: What level of English language skills do I need for the TEFL Diploma?

The Level 5 TEFL Diploma course is designed for strong (native-level) English language speakers, able to work competently with course material and assessments that are pitched at a high school graduate level. If you are fluent in English but not at native-speaker level, you may find our Level 3 TEFL Certification course is more appropriate.

  • Q: How long will it take me to complete the course?

On average, it takes students around three months to complete the course. However, you complete the course at your own pace and can go through the material faster or spread it out over a longer period, if required. You will have access to the material for 190 days (six months), which you can extend if needed.

  • Q: What happens if I don’t complete the course within 190 days?

If you don’t complete the course within 190 days, you can apply for an extension. This can be for as little as five days or as much as 90 additional days.

  • Q: How many hours will I need to study each week?

The course is designed to let you work through the material at your own pace and to fit your study around other commitments in your life.

As a rough guide, if you are studying full time, we suggest setting aside 25 to 30 hours per week, to ensure you have time to absorb and reflect on your learning. At this rate, you should complete the course within around three months. If you are studying part time, we suggest allocating at least five to ten hours per week to keep your learning going. At this pace, you should complete the course within around seven to eight months.

Do bear in mind that everyone learns at a different pace. You may progress through the material more quickly or need more time to go through the course content thoroughly.

  • Q: Is each of the three parts of the course the same length?

The first part of the course, TEFL Fundamentals, forms the main basis of the TEFL Diploma. It is set as 180 study hours and makes up 60% of the course. Both Part 2: One-to-One & Online Teaching and Part 3: Business English have 60 study hours. Each of these two parts makes up 20% of the total course. A breakdown of the course units is set out in the Course Schedule.

  • Q: Will I need to take notes as I work through the course?

You can print out the course material, so you do not need to note down all the points that you cover. However, you may find it useful to make your own notes as a personal reminder of key points you learn from the course.

  • Q: Do I need to sit any exams?

You will not need to sit any formal exams. However, you will need to submit and pass five written assignments in order to achieve your TEFL Diploma. You also will need to pass an online End of Unit Test at the end of each unit in order to confirm that you have understood the material in that unit before moving on to the next part of the course. You can find out more about the course assessment in our Assessment FAQs.

  • Q: Can I use a nickname to register for the course?

You should use your proper name when you register for the course. The name that you use to register for the course is the name that will appear on your final qualification certificate. In line with our Awarding Organisation procedures, you will need to provide a copy of your passport (or other formal ID) to confirm your identity before your certificate is issued.

  • Q: Can I contact you if I need help with the course?

Our expert TEFL Support Team is available via email, telephone and webchat to answer your questions and support you through the course. The support team includes both operational staff, who can help you with practicalities of accessing and working through the course, and academic staff who can assist with TEFL specific questions.
