The Level 5 180: Kick-start your career
Boost your TEFL learning from basic to extensive with our Level 5 180 Hour Online TEFL Course. Through this comprehensive Course, not only will you be equipped with all the tools necessary to become a successful TEFL teacher, but your qualification will also be regarded more highly than the majority of TEFL qualifications due to its sought-after Level 5 status.
In case you’re wondering, this status essentially means that our Course has been regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation of the UK government (or Ofqual, for short) and has been deemed to be the equivalent of a foundation degree or a CELTA qualification – see our Course Comparison Page for more details. In short: the higher the qualification level, the more employable you become and the more you can potentially earn – win!
The Level 5 180 Course combines fundamental TEFL learning with two Specialist Courses to give you additional preparation for teaching engaging grammar lessons and adapting your lessons to accommodate younger learners.
What’s more, as the Course is 100% online-based, you’ll benefit from 24/7 access so that you can learn on the go and fit your studying around your lifestyle. Before you know it, you’ll be TEFL qualified and ready to start your extraordinary TEFL journey!

Before you hop on the TEFL bandwagon, it’s always good to get a well-rounded idea of the content you’ll be covering in your course. Here’s a list of the modules you’ll take combined with a brief introduction of each of them:
Unit 1: Introduction to TEFL
In this section, you’ll learn all about TEFL along with historical approaches to English teaching to give you a good foundation to base the rest of your studying on.
Unit 2: Initial Lesson Planning
Unit 2 will cover the first fundamental skill of teaching English: planning an effective lesson.
Unit 3: Structuring Your Lesson
Following on from that, you’ll find out how best to construct a lesson to ensure it’s easy to follow in a classroom setting.
Unit 4: Making it Work in the Classroom
Next, it’s time to learn how to use your environment to your advantage including how to manage a classroom and creating a good teaching environment.
Unit 5: Teaching Vocabulary
In this unit, you’ll go through the meaning of words, presenting vocabulary and checking your students’ understanding of it.
Unit 6: Teaching Pronunciation
Word stress, intonation and word patterns are just a few of the topics you’ll cover in Unit 6 to help you learn to teach pronunciation.
Unit 7: Teaching Grammar
Unit 7 looks at the nuts and bolts of English, from the different word types to meaning and uses of these and how to build phrases and sentences using them.
Unit 8: Teaching Young Learners
Adapting your lessons to accommodate younger learners is a valuable skill to have in the TEFL industry. You’ll get to grips with this here.
Unit 9: Teaching the Four Skills
The four skills are reading, writing, speaking and listening. You’ll cover each of these along with ideas for teaching them, approaches and choosing materials.
Unit 10: External Resources and Next Steps
In the final unit, you’ll have access to information on coursebooks, ideas for activities and games and even some guidance on finding that all-important first job.
To make your life easier, our Level 5 180 Course is all completed online so you can fit it around work, school, university or childcare – it really couldn’t be more flexible. Whether you want to study for two hours each day or take time out to complete larger chunks at the weekend, your course will be ready and waiting for you to log in and continue where you left off. Simple!
You’ll also benefit from support and expert advice from our team of DELTA-qualified tutors. Throughout the entirety of your Course, they’ll be ready and waiting for your TEFL questions – and with their wealth of industry knowledge and experience, you’ll always get the answers you need.
All of our top TEFL Courses are regulated by the UK Government department, Ofqual and accredited by the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council (ODLQC). With a TEFL certificate from i-to-i in your pocket, you’ll stand out from the TEFL crowd.
Who are Ofqual?
Ofqual is the British exam watchdog and their job is to ensure qualifications awarded are of the highest standard. An Ofqual stamp of approval on your qualification will be recognised worldwide and is highly respected by employers, pushing your resume to the top of the pile and getting you your dream TEFL job!
Did you know?
We’ve also received independent accreditation from the ODLQC (Open & Distance Learning Quality Council) which is recognised by employers across the globe giving you a qualification which will give you the best start on your TEFL journey.
Although you might feel like a strong, independent TEFLer, you might need a nudge in the right direction every now and again - that’s where our experienced, highly-qualified tutors come in. With an abundance of insider info and industry knowledge, you’ll get all the answers you need whenever you need them. All you need to do is ask!
We offer both Level 3 and Level 5 Courses but we’d always recommend taking a Level 5 Course if your budget can stretch to it. With a Level 5, you’ll be given even more job opportunities, an increased chance of earning more and you’re job applications will be prioritised over those with Level 3 Courses or lower.
The minimum number of hours you’ll need to complete to find a basic TEFL job or volunteer position is 120. Anything more than that will mean you’re more likely to find a better role for a higher salary – so it depends on what you want to do with your qualification.
Yes! We offer a Level 3 Classroom TEFL Course which can be added to any of our Level 5 Courses to help boost your learning and it also makes you more desirable to employers – win!
Yep! Tons of our graduates are from non-native English speaking countries and they’re pursuing their TEFL careers all over the world. As long as you have a near-native level of English, you can take a Level 5 Course. If you're not quite at a near-native level, check out our Level 3 TEFL Courses instead.
The Course will teach you everything you need to know about grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, so don’t worry if grammar’s not your strongest subject – we’ve got you covered.
To complete the 180 hours of online training, you'll get 180 days. This usually allows more than enough time for our teachers to work through the training. Don't panic if you do run out of time - we offer extensions for up to a year which can be added at any time.
CELTA stands for Certificate in Teaching English to Adults, so if you want to teach children and teenagers, a Level 5 TEFL Course is your best option. Also, a CELTA qualification costs around £1,500 and requires 6 weeks of full-time, in-class training. It’s a no-brainer!
From our friendly TEFL Experts to our DELTA-qualified tutors; our whole squad is passionate about providing excellent customer service – and we’ll be there for you on every step of your TEFL journey.
Here at i-to-i, we’ve built a very strong name for ourselves in the industry. So, not only will your qualification be respected and recognised, it’ll be favoured by employers around the globe.
Established in 1994, we’re the longest-standing TEFL Course provider in the world. Our graduates number over 182,000 and we even pioneered the first ever online and weekend TEFL Courses.
