ONLINE TEFL COMPANIES FOR NEW TEACHERS WITHOUT A DEGREE

No degree? No problem! As long as you’ve got your TEFL qualification and are fluent in English, you can still teach English online. It’s all about focussing on the right companies – and first up are our pick of online TEFL platforms that don’t require you to have a degree AND are open to newbie teachers.

PalFish

PalFish is a super-easy app designed for teaching children. It’s a great place to look for your first online TEFL job, as PalFish provides pre-prepared lesson plans. Win! In fact, all you need to get started is your TEFL qualification plus a phone/tablet to teach from and you’re good to go!

Expected Salary: PalFish pays an hourly rate of $16 to $22. There’s also a heap of bonuses on offer for anything from turning up to all your classes to selling the most trial lessons, meaning you really can earn decent money with PalFish if you put in the hours.

Required hours: To teach English online for PalFish, you’re required to open a minimum of 8 slots (4 hours) per week. After that, it’s up to you how much or little you want to work.

Experience needed: PalFish is a brilliant option when you’re starting out as an online English teacher, as you don’t need previous teaching experience. As long as you’re 18 or over and have a TEFL qualification

Nationalities accepted: To apply to PalFish you need to be a native English speaker with a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia. There’s also a separate non-native English programme (paid at a lower rate) which is open to teachers from the Philippines.

 

Preply

Preply is another platform that makes it super-easy for newbie TEFL teachers to find work. You can teach students of all ages from anywhere in the world and you set your own rates. Plus, as Preply offers lessons in heaps of languages, you could even pick up some new skills of your own. Amazing!

Expected Salary: At Preply you set your own rates but, as a rough guide, English tutors usually charge between $15 to $25 per hour. New TEFL teachers often start out at the lower end of the scale to attract students and then increase prices as their experience grows – but ultimately, it’s up to you how much you charge.

Required hours: There’s no minimum time commitment for Preply. You’re the boss and you can work as much or as little as you choose.

Experience needed: You don’t need any previous teaching experience to work for Preply, just need your TEFL qualification. Awesome!

Nationalities accepted: Preply accepts fluent English speakers of all nationalities.

 

Cambly

Expected Salary: Skima Talk is another platform where you set your own hourly rate. As with other similar companies, new TEFL teachers tend to pitch at a lower price to attract students and then increase their rates as their student numbers and experience grow – but it’s up to you.

Required hours: You set your own schedule for Skima Talk, so you can work as few or as many hours as you choose.

Experience needed: Teaching experience is a plus but it’s definitely not essential for teaching English with Skima Talk. However, do make sure you’re TEFL qualified.

Nationalities accepted: Skima Talk only accepts teachers who are native English speakers.

 

italki

italki is a global platform that connects up students and teachers for one-to-one lessons. Even if you’re a newbie TEFL teacher, your TEFL qualification means you can apply for a Professional Teacher role straight off, and bag yourself a job with the best pay rates. Win! However, if you want to build up your experience first, italki also has a community tutor role, where you deliver informal conversational classes.

Expected Salary: Once again, you set your own rates as an online TEFL teacher with italki. The platform states that Professional Teachers earn between $10 to $80 – but definitely expect to start at the bottom end of that scale, unless you’ve got tons of previous teaching experience.

Required hours: With italki it’s up to you when you work. You set the hours you’re available and students book on to your lessons – and with students all over the world, there’s always someone wanting to learn English.

Experience needed: Experience is a plus but, as long as you’ve got your TEFL qualification you can still apply as an italki Professional Teacher.

Nationalities accepted: All nationalities are accepted but you must be either a native English speaker or at a near-native English level to become a Professional Teacher.

 

Engoo

Engoo is a great option if you’re struggling to land an online teaching post with one of the bigger platforms. Pay rates are towards the lower end of the scale but look on it as a way to bring in some money as you build your experience. Plus Engoo provides the lesson plans, which means all you need to think about is the delivery.

Expected Salary: You can earn between $2 and £10 per hour teaching online for Engoo.

Required hours: You can decide your own hours and work as much or as little as you choose with Engoo

Experience needed: You don’t need any previous teaching experience to work for Engoo. Once you’re TEFL qualified you can apply straight away!

Plus, it’s one of the higher-paying TEFL options for teachers without a degree. Lovely!

Expected Salary: You can earn between $13 to $15 an hour, teaching online with Open English.

Required hours: You need to be available for at least 10 hours a week to work for Open English, which makes it a good option if you’re looking for regular work.

Experience needed: You stand a better chance of getting hired if you’re both TEFL qualified and have previous teaching experience. However, if you can show other relevant experience, you might still land a post.

Nationalities accepted: All nationalities are accepted, as long as you’re fluent in English. If you also speak Spanish, that’s a definite plus.

Required hours: You need to commit to at least 10 hours per week in peak times to work for Learnlight, plus you have to sign up for a minimum of a year – which can either be a huge pro or a downside, depending on what you’re looking for!

Experience needed: Learnlight expects their teachers to have at least 2 years of teaching experience plus a TEFL qualification.

Tutlo

Do you want to connect with people from all over the world? We have just the ticket! With Tutlo, you can organise your own work schedule and teach from anywhere in the world. What’s holding you back?

Expected Salary: You can earn between $5 to $11 per hour.

Required hours: It’s up to you what hours you work at Tutlo as this is another platform where you set your own schedule.

Experience needed: You need a TEFL qualification plus at least 6 months’ teaching experience but this can include volunteer work or private tutoring.

Nationalities accepted: Tutlo accepts native English speakers from the UK, US, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa – although they do say that non-native English speakers are welcome to apply too!

 

Lingoda

If you’re looking for a flexible role that lets you teach small classes of adult students, then Lingoda is your go-to! You can teach anyone from beginners right up to specialist classes, such as business English. Even better, Lingoda supplies the teaching materials meaning you can focus your energy on the delivery. Amazing!

Expected Salary: You’ll normally earn between $8 to $13 per hour.

Required hours: Technically, Lingoda doesn’t have a minimum number of hours. However, they do expect their teachers to work for between 5 to 20 hours per week. When you teach those hours is completely up to you however and you can set your own schedule each week.

Experience needed: Lingoda asks for 2 to 3 years of teaching experience plus your TEFL qualification.

Nationalities accepted: All nationalities are accepted but you need to be at least C2 level of English and also at a higher level than any class that you teach (hopefully, that last bit’s obvious!)

 

Amazing Talker

Last but not least for TEFL companies that don’t require need a degree, take a look at Amazing Talker. Students of all ages send in their requests for tutors and an automated matching system links them up with potential teachers. It’s a slightly different approach to other online TEFL companies we’ve listed here – but why not give it a go!

Expected Salary: You set your own rates. The platform claims its top tutors earn £17 to £49 per hour – but definitely don’t expect to hit these heights from day one. £8 to £11 per hour is more usual.

Required hours: There are no required minimum hours for teaching English online with Amazing Talker You set your schedule and students book on to your classes.

Experience needed: You need at least two years of teaching experience and a TEFL qualification.

Nationalities accepted: All nationalities are accepted but you do need to either be a native English speaker or have a degree in English.

Expected Salary: You can earn between $10 to $17 per hour.

Required hours: You normally need to be available during peak teaching times for EF English First – although that depends on which time zone you’re in!

Experience needed: You don’t need previous teaching experience but you do need to hold both a TEFL qualification and a bachelor’s degree.

Nationalities accepted: EF accepts fluent English speakers who hold passports for either the UK or US.

 

SayABC

If you fancy delivering fun, interactive lessons to kids, based on National Geographic materials, then look no further than SayABC. This is a fabulous platform to start your online teaching career – and you might even learn something yourself!

Expected Salary: You can earn between $8 to $17 per hour with SayABC.

Required hours: You can set your own schedule with SayABC but you will need to stick to their set class times, so make sure you check out what these are in your time zone.

Experience needed: One year’s teaching experience is preferred but you can still apply as a newbie teacher, as long as you have a TEFL qualification and a bachelor’s degree in any subject.

Nationalities accepted: SayABC accepts fluent English speakers from the UK, US, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa.

 

Magic Ears

Magic Ears is a super-interactive online TEFL platform, that focuses on small group classes for kids. Expected Salary: You can earn between $20 to $26 per hour for teaching with Magic Ears, which can be topped up further with bonuses for recruiting other teachers to the platform.

Required hours: You need to sign up for a minimum of 6 months if you want to teach English online with Magic Ears. Technically, there’s no minimum number of hours but Magic Ears recommends that you open up at least 10 slots per week and that you focus on peak times to pick up a decent level of work.

Experience needed: No experience is required (although you’ll be higher up the pile if you do have experience) but you will need a TEFL qualification and bachelor’s degree or proof that you’re registered on a degree course.

Nationalities accepted: All nationalities are accepted.

 

VIPX

If you want a stable schedule packed full of teaching English online to kids from China, then VIPX is a brilliant option. VIPKid

If you’re from the US or Canada, working for VIPKid is a great way to teach English online. You can earn an amazing salary and teach a mixture of teenagers and children – plus teaching materials are provided. Count us in!

Expected Salary: You can earn between $14 to $22 per hour.

Required hours: VIPKid has now removed their minimum hour requirement, meaning you can work as much or as little as you choose – but you will definitely get more work if you open your schedule for peak teaching slots.

Experience needed: You’ll normally need at least two years’ relevant experience to teach with VIPKid on top of your TEFL qualification and a bachelor’s degree in any subject.

Nationalities accepted: Only teachers eligible to work in the US or Canada can apply to work for VIPKid but you can be based anywhere in the world.

DaDa

If you’re an experienced teacher and love the idea of high-quality, one-to-one classes, DaDa may be perfect for you! This company is on a mission to be the best online international school in China – plus its pay is pretty decent too.

Expected Salary: You can earn between $15 to $25 per hour. You’ll normally start at the lower end of this scale and then increase your rate based on the hours you work plus performance. Required hours: To teach English online for DaDa, you’re required to work for at least 10 hours per month – but it’s up to you when you teach them, so you can build a timetable that fits around your life.

Required hours: To teach online with Whales English, you need to sign up for a minimum 12 months’ contract and commit to teaching during peak hours. Within that, however, you can choose the days and hours you work – which can be either weekdays, weekends, or a blend of both.

Experience needed: You must have a minimum of one year’s teaching experience to work for Whales English, plus a bachelor’s degree and TEFL qualification.

Nationalities accepted: To apply for Whales English, you need to be a native English speaker from the UK, US, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Canada – but you can teach from anywhere in the world.

 

GOGOKID

GOGOKID is a great option for US and Canadian teachers (or anyone eligible to work in those countries) who love the idea of delivering one-to-one lessons to children in China. Lesson materials are provided, leaving you to deliver fabulous lessons.

Required hours: GOGOKID asks teachers to sign up for a minimum contract of 6 months. Teachers set their own schedules, so there are no required teaching hours. However, GoGo Kid strongly recommends that you open up slots during peak hours if you want to have a decent number of students.

Experience needed: As well as a bachelor’s degree and TEFL qualification you’ll need teaching experience to work for GOGOKID – but this can be from any relevant setting.

Nationalities accepted: You need to be eligible to work in the US or Canada to apply but you can actually teach from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a solid internet connection.

 

31abc

31abc is another online TEFL company that’s focused on teaching Chinese children aged 4 to 12. After a trial lesson, students are allocated a set online English teacher for the classes – which may continue for a year or more. This means 31abc is less flexible than platforms that let you change your schedule each week but, on the flip side, it gives you greater job security plus the opportunity to really get to know your students.

Expected Salary: You can earn between $7 to $22 per hour. You start off with a base salary at the lower end of the scale but can then top this up with bonuses based on the successful delivery of your classes, with an extra bonus also available if students sign up following a trial class.

Required hours: To teach English online with 31abc, you need to commit to at least 2 hours per day for three days per week. This can be either Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Experience needed: You’ll need at least one year’s experience, a bachelor’s degree, and a TEFL qualification.

Nationalities accepted: You need to be a fluent English speaker from the US, Canada, or the UK.
