Brazil's culture is diverse, and incredibly interesting to learn about for travellers who are heading to the area. The earliest known settlers are believed to have inhabited the land at least 15,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans - owing to Brazil’s uniqueness as its status as the only Latin American country to form part of the Portuguese empire. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century and developed brazilwood, sugar cane and gold exports. The country’s profitable resources also attracted the attentions of the French and Dutch - but was was the Portuguese who maintained overall control until 1822 when Brazil declared independence. Following the abolition of slavery in 1888, an influx of European immigrants flocked to Brazil to work on the highly profitable coffee plants, and now Brazil is a thriving, developing country. Visit cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and you'll see a rise of skyscapers and business!
