Volunteering in Asia: Where to GoA volunteer meditating

When thinking of Asia, conflicting images often come to mind: crowded metropolises and peaceful rice paddies, quiet meditation contrasted against fireworks and gongs. Even geographically, Asia has it all - tropical rainforests and alpine peaks, desert and stunning coast. In a continent so full of diverse languages, religions and cultures, you’re sure to find something valuable while you volunteer in Asia.

Manmade Marvels

Two of the most notable of Asia’s architectural wonders are the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely considered to be one of the seven modern wonders of the world and is India’s most popular tourist attraction. Centuries old and impeccably constructed out of white marble, it is a monument that few ever forget. It is particularly impressive at sunset, when the marble takes on the hues of the dying light.

The Great Wall of China is also an incredible work of architecture and is thought to be another of the modern wonders of the world as well. Famous for its length - over 4,000 miles long, 25 feet high and 20 feet wide - it's the only manmade structure that can be seen from space. The experience of walking along this famous landmark is not to be missed.

Significant Buildings

The Asian continent is scattered with palaces and temples, so if you’re looking to explore historic or religious structures this is the place to be.

Beijing is a good place to start. The city is China’s political, economic and cultural capital and hosts such attractions as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, the underground city and the Temple of Heaven. These attractions are a great way to spend your weekends when you're not volunteering.

Other notable buildings include the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Angkor Wat in Cambodia or the Potala Palace in Tibet.

Historical Relics

One of the most famous archaeological discoveries in Asia was that of the terracotta warriors. Unearthed just 30 years ago, the terracotta army of Emperor Qin consists of over 8,000 soldiers, each over two thousand years old. We have a work experience placement volunteering at this world famous museum in China.

Cultural Connections

With so much diversity, a simple generalization wouldn't do Asia's culture justice. There's a stark contrast between chaotic city life and the peaceful outdoors. But whether you’re meditating with Buddhist monks in the Himalayas or living in a longhouse in the jungles of Malaysia, you're bound to be won over by a culture profoundly different from your own.

Spirituality

Asia is the birthplace of many major religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism and Shinto to name a few. Over time, strong Muslim and Christian influences have made their way into Asia as well, making it a country rich in religious diversity. Religion is very important to most Asians, and gives an excellent insight into their culture. The East is the perfect place to explore new faiths and surround yourself in mysticism.

Rainforests

Southeast Asia is home to the third largest tropical rainforest in the world. And with the small size of most of the islands in the area, you’ll never be too far away from the ocean or the jungle. The majority of the rainforest lies within Indonesia, but also thrives on Laos, Malaysia and Cambodia.

Beaches

Asia boasts many beautiful and isolated beaches. Notable coastlines include those of Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. Take a break from volunteering and lie on the beach for a while. Take in the white sands and sparkling waters that make these beaches so appealing.

Wildlife

Asia is home to many unique species of wildlife. In Indonesia, you can spot Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island or orang-utans in Gunung Leuser National Park. Tigers can be found in Southeast Asia, from Indonesia to India. The world’s remaining panda population is found in China. Volunteers interested in working to preserve these creatures can participate in our panda conservation program.

Adventure

There are many adventure destinations in Asia; one of the more notable is the Himalayas in India and Nepal. For those who are up for a challenge, trekking in the Himalayas is the best there is.

For a distinctly opposite escapade, adventure can be found below sea level in the stunning islands of the South Pacific. The archipelago that is Southeast Asia is a diver’s paradise. Explore the marvels of Indonesia, Malaysia, or the Philippines on a diving excursion or surf in Bali if you prefer to stay above the water.

This is just a brief overview of some of the wonderful things to see in Asia. It is an enormous and diverse continent, full of wonderful people, amazing opportunities and impressive attractions. Once you’ve decided you want to volunteer in Asia, narrowing down your options can be tricky. Surf the web, go to the library or look through our country guides to find out more information about the country that’s the right fit for you.
