Local Elaine Further Her Travels by Teaching in China

A Ballybofey, County Donegal local, is furthering her great adventure in life to travel - by teaching English in China.

26 year old Elaine McGarvey, currently backpacking in Thailand, has a passion for teaching and travel.

So, before she left to go travelling in July this year, she was canny enough to realise that a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification through i-to-i would be the answer to extending her journey around the world.

Elaine explained: “I’ve always been interested in doing a TEFL course. I really enjoy working in education and with children, and love to travel, so TEFL was ideal – it’s the perfect way to fund a few years travelling.”

Elaine is currently firming up her contract to work in a Chinese school, to commence in September this year.

She has had many teaching roles; including a special needs assistant in a primary school, and volunteering at a school in South Africa.

Although Elaine has more teaching experience than most, it hasn’t stopped many other people from teaching English abroad, with no experience.

Every year, thousands of people take a TEFL course through County Waterford based i-to-i. And they realise that in many cases, just the certificate is needed to open the gateway to a rewarding teaching experience around the world.

Elaine has a BA degree in geography and psychological studies from National University of Ireland Galway, and a post graduate conversion certificate in psychology from Liverpool Hope University.

And how will Elaine settle into her new life?: “I’m very adaptable and have lived in many different places, and can adjust to whatever culture I’m emerged into.

“I’m very easy going and can make friends easily. I also like to learn about new places, cultures and traditions, so I’m really looking forward to China.”
