Tullamore Architect Designs New Life Teaching English in South Korea
These days, gaining a certificate to teach English around the world is not just for backpackers, as Tullamore architect Warren Maher knows well. He, like many in the construction industry, was made redundant last year as an architectural technician in Dublin.
And Warren is part of a growing number of people from a professional background, deciding to take a different direction during the economic squeeze, and teach English.
Now, Warren is about to start a life-changing adventure – teaching to students at a high school in Ilsan, South Korea.
The County Offaly resident was inspired after visiting friends teaching in Seoul.
Warren had no previous teaching experience. But this did not stop him from securing an enriching experience for 12 months, starting in September.
Warren explained: “I completed a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification at i-to-i. Once I had this, I managed to find this placement which has many perks.
“Because I have over 100 hours of TEFL training, on completion of a full years service I will get one months salary as a bonus. The school will pay for accommodation and flight. They’ll even subsidise my health insurance.”
Warren explained that the TEFL certificate and university degree, were the only main criteria needed to kick-start his enriching new life. He has a degree from the Dublin Institute of Technology in Architectural Technology.
Every year, thousands of people from all walks of life, take a TEFL course through County Waterford based i-to-i, and realise that in many cases, just the certificate is needed to open the gateway to a rewarding teaching experience around the world.
And what is Warren looking forward to?: “The culture is radically different to my own. I’m excited to meet new people and share in another nation’s culture, and teach people about mine.”
