A pioneering new project has opened up a world of volunteering opportunities in Uganda. The project, developed as part of a Channel 4 documentary to be aired in September, gives travellers the opportunity to teach local children vital language skills that they would otherwise never have the opportunity to learn.
The Teach Inn project was set up by Deirdre Bounds (founder of i-to-i), Seb Bishop, Dominic McVey and Tony Callaghan as part of a Channel 4 documentary to be broadcast in September 2007.
The simple aim of Teach Inn was to convert an old village school building into accommodation to house English teaching volunteers. The Teach Inn hotel will provide a base for international volunteers, but will also help fund future community development projects in the area, with all the profits made from volunteers staying in the hotel being ploughed back into community projects.
This non-profit project helps to teach children in the small village of Niyakasiru in the peaceful southern region of Uganda, near the border with Tanzania. Most of the children in Niyakasiru don’t go to school but work in the fields because their parents can’t afford school fees. You can help give the children an education while providing a steady income for the village
This project is now managed by meaningful travel provider i-to-i and aims to give these children a proper education while providing a steady income for the village. You will be teaching English at the village school and staying at the unique Teach Inn hotel which has been built to house volunteer teachers and to fund future projects that will benefit the local community.
All the money raised by the hotel is ploughed back into projects that benefit the villagers. Currently the local people are building a much needed grain store. A complete Online TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course is included in the cost so that we can offer the children the quality of education they deserve.
