Famous sarongs boost post-tsunami income

Pusadee Bukkalo, 33, is the leader of the 15-member handicraft group in Ao Nang village in Krabi. The area is famous for its pristine beaches, while the New Year Songkhran Festival and other popular events and celebrations bring tourists to the village.

The enterprise started after World Vision provided start-up equipment for the group. They now sell their handicrafts through a number of locally-run shops which cater for the tourist trade. In a good month, the group sell up to 300 pieces including door, window and wall decorations, and wind chimes. Member Wanida Dumkul says part of their future plan is to develop new products that can easily be sold in the market. They are hopeful to receive continuing training so they can keep improving their skills over time.

Each member takes away a small daily-wage, while the rest of the income goes to a savings fund for long-term family needs and expansion of the business. World Vision has provided accounting and marketing training to help the women expand and grow their business.

Their goal is to build a display centre in an area that is popular with both local and foreign tourists. This will increase their exposure and will hopefully lead to more sales and more income for the group members and their families.
