This is your chance to get to grips with tourism in the beautiful coastal area of Salvador where the sun (almost) always shines! As an international volunteer you will be in a perfect position to assist with a unique project which works with youngsters from low income families, helping them find a way into the tourism industry. As well as providing an invaluable insight into a different culture, you will also help by planning and executing promotional campaigns, providing classroom assistance and supporting IT training.

Project details:
The aim of this project is to help teenagers and young people from poor communities to prepare for employment. All of the youngsters taking part in this project have shown better results at school, and have also improved their family relations and social behaviour. One branch of the project is to support and train youths for jobs within the tourist industry (for example in hotel management, hospitality and events). The project also encompasses community development supporting youngsters who are HIV positive.

Why the project needs volunteers:
Due to the nature and focus of this project, volunteers are desperately needed to work in the development of cultural exchange and English tuition for the young adults that attend the scheme.

What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project:
It is vital that you approach this project with a professional attitude, in order to set an example to the teenagers and young adults. Some professional experience in the tourism industry would be a great advantage, although not essential, providing you can demonstrate at least awareness and a serious interest in the industry. Basic Brazilian Portuguese and/or Intermediate Spanish is recommended.

Your role as a volunteer:
You should expect your time at this project to be varied, and to be involved in many different activities. As well as supporting classroom activities, you will also help organise and join the youngsters in extra class activities supervised by the academic coordinator, accompany the team activities, and help the instructors to create teaching materials. Other aspects include planning and executing promotional campaigns, supporting IT training and helping to train youngsters in skills pertinnet to the hotel and tourism business.

Where the project is based:
Salvador is on the east coast of Brazil in the state of Bahia. It has a unique and vibrant culture based around its African roots which is reflected in its music, dance and religion. The historic centre boasts ornate churches and cobbled streets. There are fantastic beaches within 45 minutes of the city centre and relaxed islands off the coast. In Salvador the climate is very hot, even in winter the temperature at night is never less than 19°C.

You should book your flight to arrive at Salvador International Airport (SSA) on your scheduled arrival date.
