Project Overview

A good choice if you are new to teaching and want a more urban project, these schools in San Jose and various towns in the Central Valley will appreciate your help as the teaching assistant. After a while you might enjoy the buzz and more responsibility of taking lessons on your own. Privately funded schools generally have good resources and lessons are normally well organised. The government schools tend to have fewer resources, so you might find the lessons more challenging and quite lively.

Placement details:

i-to-i volunteers work in a number of schools located in both Grecia and Atenas in the centre of Costa Rica. Volunteers work in a mixture of primary and secondary schools as well as Government run and private funded school. Privately funded schools are generally well resourced whereas Government schools tend to have poor discipline and are less organised.

Why volunteer at this placement:

Urban Schools in Costa Rica have English included in the curriculum and must be covered by all children. However there is a lack of English teachers to complete the required level. Volunteers are valued where English is their native or near native language to aid in the learning of the children.

By teaching young people English you will be able to make a positive impact on their lives and make more opportunities available to them, for example by going to university, getting jobs in tourism and business and commerce.

What kind of skills you need to go on this type of placement:

Volunteers most of all for these projects must have a love of children and be committed to the project. You will need to be flexible and be willing to get involved in anything that is asked of you. You must also be aware that the children you are working with are very lively and also disruptive and will need perseverance and tolerance when working with them. You will need to be able to think on your feet so that you are able to tailor your lessons to the different needs of the children if necessary. Spanish language is not a pre-requisite but a working knowledge would be a great advantage. The add-on Spanish lessons are recommended they will help you to settle into your time away.

Your role as a volunteer:

At the urban teaching projects you will be a teaching assistant and working with the curriculum. You may as you gain confidence you can request that you take a class for yourself but you would not be pushed to do this. In the majority of schools you would be able to get involved in other areas if you have a specific interest, in these cases you would need to discuss your ideas with the project host. In some of the schools you may be asked to assist the teachers with other subjects.

Where the placement is based:

Please arrange your flight to arrive into San Jose (SJO) on the specified arrival date. The projects are based in a number of locations, you would be staying with a local family for all these schools where you can immerse yourself in the culture. You would not be located in a major city but could be on the outskirts or in small towns where you will have access to local facilities.

You will be staying in a homestay, this is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and improve your Spanish.
