    Hi there :)

I'm teaching on Koh Tao during December 2008 and January 2009. What's everyone doing with regarding the political drama over in Bangkok at the moment?

    i-to-i Staff
    Hello all travellers to Thailand!

We have been hoping that the current situation in Thailand would have been resolved over the weekend, however it seems more likely that it will be nearer to the end of the week now. Our In-Country Coordinator has advised that the court were going to see if the ruling party have done anything illegal in getting into power and also the King of Thailand is due to give a speech on Thursday - He is very influential! We are hoping the airports will be open by the end of the week.

At this stage, we will have to see how things go later on in December and into the New Year. It is a matter of keeping an eye on the news, on current travel advice and checking with the airlines - just as you are doing.

The current update on our website states the following:

There have been a series of demonstrations in Bangkok during recent months, this is due to the People`s Movement for Democracy demonstrating against the President as they are wanting him to step down. The most recent demonstration started on Tuesday 25th November 2008 and has resulted in the closure of Bangkok International Airport (BKK). At this time the airport remains closed and we would advise anyone with travel to Bangkok in the next few days to contact their airline for more information.

All the projects that i-to-i use are situated away from Bangkok and are not affected by these demonstrations. With the assistance of local, dedicated staff, i-to-i is continuously monitoring the situation on the ground to ensure that the our volunteers remain unaffected. Our volunteers are fully briefed on arrival into Thailand and are advised on how to stay safe while they are there and to avoid any public demonstrations. We also monitor Travel Advice stated by the Foreign and Commonwealth office (FCO UK) which advises to exercise caution and avoid public demonstrations. Please review the Travel Advice from your home country for up-to-date information.
