South America: Anybody Else going to Rio De Janeiro in Jan 09??!

    Ive just booked up to go to Rio De Janeiro on 2nd Jan 2009 to help with the carnival preparation! Has anyone done/doing currently this project? Or is anyone booked up to go also?

    Hi Emily,

    I'm booked on to this project too. I'm due to start on 16th Jan 2009. I'm really looking forward to it. Are you travelling alone or as part of a group? I will be going by myself and have booked onto a language course as I speak no Portuguese.

    Do you know much about the accommodation as I don't? I think it's a volunteer house.

    Hiya,

    Im travelling alone as well, where will you be flying from? Im going to start learning the language too, try to prepare! I dont know much no, I thin kfrom the welcome pack we are staying in a place called Baron Gardens in Santa Teresa, the lady i sopke to on the phone said that apparantley there are lots of hammocks outside?! I think it might be more of a guest house that all the volunteers stay in. Not to sure tho!

    Im very excited as well! Where are u from?

    Hi there guys

    I am trying to get there for Jan 09.

    I was thinking of leaving Sydney in November and going to Salvador first to work in the dance & arts centre, apparently their festival is amazing too. I will prob be there for Xmas and New Year.

    Then I wanted to go to Rio about end of Jan but I cant seem to find a placement that starts then,the last one that I can get on seems to be Dec 2008 but that is way too early.

    When did you book yours? any ideas why I cant seem to get one starting in Jan.

    Anyway all being good, I might be out there too, be amazing! Also travelling on my own. Where you guys from?

    I would also like to learn the language, cant believe that its portuguese when the rest of the country is Spanish!

    Hi Helen,

    I booked my placement for 2nd Jan about a week ago, Im not sure how many places were left. Have you spoken to anybody on the phone? That would b great if you could get out there too. Im from Bude in Cornwall, but not sure where ill be flying from....where ever is cheapest! Yep, im going to buy a tape and try and learn a bit of portugese. Im not great at languages tho so a bit worried!

    I hope you manage to book Helen, let me know how it goes!

    All the Jan places are gone :(

    If I want to do it, I have to go on the one starting on the 4 Dec and can do 6 weeks.

    I am having a think about that, would have preferred Jan but I guess if I did the December one I can still make friends and contacts and then come back for the Carnival itself.

    SO I think I might do Rio in Dec/ and stat of Jan, then go to Salvador and then come back to Rio and then hightail it down for a trip that I am doing in the Antartic.

    I am from Brighton, Uk but have been living in Sydney for 5 years. I used to have many school hols in Cornwall!!

    Are you doing a lot of travelling in S America?

    That sucks it didnt work out as planned, but if you were there for 6 weeks from early dec, I would be there for your last 2 weeks! You could go back for the carnival, that is an option, I have to say im gutted im not there then, but i am going to book flexible flights so never say never! And you are going to the Antartic? Is that with i-to-i or separatley? Sounds fantastic!

    Ooo I love Brighton, Syndney sounds incredible! How do you find living out there?

    Im not doing any more travelling in S America atm, Im travelling in Europe Oct/Nov/Dec, then home for a few days at Christmas, then off to Rio. Im already really excited, bought my Portugese Dictionary yest!

    Do you think you will book for Dec?

    Have the day off tomorrow so am planning a trip to the travel agent.

    Will let you know what I choose to do. Am thinking 4 weeks in Rio on the Carnival placement so we will cross over a little bit with you.

    When do you think you will arrive, would you be there for New Year? that could be amazing.

    Yeh after Rio I have got a full on trip planned for Central and S America for a year!!! Am totally stoked with the Antartic Trip which is through GAP.

    Then to Italy, then to UK to see family and then back to Sydney PHEW!!

    Hi,

    Sorry for taking so long to reply. I'm from London and I expect I will be flying from Heathrow although I haven't booked the flight yet. I'm in Sydney at the moment for 6 months but will be back in London before flying out to Brazil.

    I'll be working on the project till the carnival so hopefully will get to take part. I hope to do some more travelling around south and central America after but only if I meet other people who want to do the same.

    I think ill be flying from Heathrow, although like you i havent booked yet. Shame you are starting on the 16th else we could have flown at the same time!

    Hey Guys,
    I havnt done any volunteer work in Rio so I cant comment on that but i just got back from travelling in Rio so thought id leave a comment to say it was amazing and you will have the best time ever it is soo gorgeous!!! I stayed in Santa teresa whilst I was there and it is a lovely neighbourhood with little trouble, you will like it im sure. Learn a few phrases before you go and have fun!

    How is your trip planning coming along?

    So brazil81 you are in Sydney, me too...where abouts are you living?

    I will still be in Rio from about the 2nd week in Jan to the end of Feb but am doing another placement now with a voluntary NGO that I found based in Rio. Am going to be assisting with dance lessons in a ballet school, cant wait.

    But will still be there at the same time as you guys so still keen to hook up?

    hey there,
    I have been wanting to go to south america for a while, and to be there for carnevale seems so amazing. I just found the trip on i to i. but from reading what everyone has written, is it true to assume there are no longer placements available closer to the carnivale dates...?? :(
    I really want to go end of jan/feb....i havent properly looked into it yet though...
    I would be travelling by myself as well. and would love to travel a bit after if i made some fellow friends who would want to do the same. bit scared about the travelling alone part, as i have never done it before. so tips would be great!

    Hi Rachel,

    I feel the same!! Very nervous about travelling alone but also very excited!! Im booked from 2nd- 31st Jan 09 and as i understand it I booked the last available place, I think anything after that (obv very close to Carnival) is booked aswell, but you should give i-to-i a call, they were really helpful when i spoke to them. I hope there are places available for you, i would feel happier knowing a few people before i go! There may be other courses in Rio still avialable when you want to be there, i know there was a course painting favelas which i was considering...you would still be there during the Carnival...might be worth considering? Let me know how it goes!!

    Hey Emily, thanks for replying! Its cool, I am now going in 2010. I am just waiting on the new dates. It would probably be better if I went the year after anyways, as I will be too poor this year!!! I expect lots of great stories to be posted up on here though from all of you after your amazing travels so I have lots to look forward to!

    Hello all

    Im going to rio on 21st of november till 13th march, such a long time so il probably meet you all if your there in january.
    Apparently the guest house has hammocks and a swimming pool a large kitchen and shared rooms between 8 and 3.

    I really want to travel around brazil after my work placement has finished hopefully i can meet people that want to join me

    hey guys,

    I am also helping with the carnival preparation. I will arrive in rio on 30th jan and will be there until 27th feb. i decided to do these dates as the carnival will take place in the last week and so as well as prepare for it i really wanted to see it too. can't wait. i'm going by myself as well. i'm from london.

    actually, i offer a driver service in Rio de Janeiro witch include tourist guide.. but even if u wouldn't like to get my services, i'm able to help u around.. i love to help tourists enjoying my wonderful city.
    Last weekend my home becomes a "hostel".. i receive 3 friends of "AIESEC International" at my home. One from Ukraine, another from Mexico and one from Guatemala. They really enjoy. I take them to sugar loaf, christ redeemer, tijuca's national park, ipanema's, copacabana's, arpoador's and barra da tijuca's beaches, samba's school etc..

    Oh.. I Forgot to teel u about my services... :-)

    I Have all cars u want.. i have de Fiat Doblo.. wich is a Fiat with capacity of 7 passengers
    basic 2-doors cars
    basic 4-doors cars
    Executive etc.
    the cheaper one have capacity for 4 passengers and the driver, wich is included. It coasts only R$120,00 a day(24 hour) - Take and leave wherever u want at the time u want. as u can walk around with no limits, the gas is responsability of the passengers.. the alchool in Rio coasts R$1,49/l.. and the basic car goes 13km/L

    Example:
    If u are in 4 ppl.. and arrived in rio at 1pm, the car and the driver tourist guide will be available for u until 1pm of the next day. and u'll pay only R$120,00(R$30,00 for each ppl --> the same as US$13,00) anb the gas u. for example.. if in 1 day.. u run 40km.. it'll coast about R$5,00.
    Very cheap as u can see.
    I Hope u enjoy, but even if u wouldn't like to use my services, i can help u with some tips and to take u someplaces around here!

    hey guys, i cant wait for Brazil! im doing the community work with young children starting on the 16th! i can not wait to start! is anyone going to be there for new years? any plans for it? Also, does anyone know how many volunteers there are living in this volunteer house?

    Im from Hertfordshire and im doing carvinal prep for 7 weeeks and then having a week of and changing to favela renovation and doing that for 7 weeks and then iv got a month of to explore before i go home.
    I got a flight for £460 threw flight centre, but it changes by the day and time so jus reaserch a bit and you will find a cheap flight. Are you doing carvinal prep for the whole time?
    And il be there over xmas and new years, no plans just see what happenes.I cant wait to spend that time in Rio will be amazing!!!

    hey, guys!
    Is it everyone's first time in Brazil/Rio de Janeiro??
    This weekend i meet a canadian who is here for volunteer program also. she's in a hostel at Catete. She told me she's paying R$30,00 a day. She'll stay here until january.
    If you want, i can send you the phone of the hostel.. but i didn't go into it to see the accommodation, so i don't know if this is a good hostel..
    I took her to a soccer game yesterday.. was really nice. A friend mine gives her a t-shirt of our soccer team and she met some professional soccer players... i think she enjoyed it very much.. and i take her, before of the game, to the training center of the Botafogo's professional soccer team, we have lunch in a traditional barbecue near to the stadium and then we watched the game.
    It was really nice.
    So any helps you need, you can ask me... i can give you some tips of places to stay etc.. is just to send me the places where you are going to work that i can give you some tips. See you soon!

    Im cancelling my place on the course in Jan! Ive been offered a place at uni and it seems like the right choice so im off on Sunday to London! Im gutted i wont b going to Rio anymore but am going to try and book to go at a better time. I just thought you guys on here might want to know there will be a cancellation on the carnival prep course from 2nd to 31st Jan 09. I hope you all have the best time, make sure u post some blogs, Im jealous!!!

    im sarah from Edinburgh and am hoping to get to Rio next year, carnival time would be awesome, but it depends on my organisation and fundraising skills :-s am going to be travelling with my cousin, and hoping to stay in Rio for a few months - if not on a project then working.... Ah, got so many questions and things I'd like to find out before going, where to start! maybe the best thing is to just get there and find out!

    Be good to get in touch with people going anyways and we would love to be on the carnival prep project-i am an artist and it sounds like so much fun!

    Hi!

    I'm Monica from Gibraltar. I'll be going to do the Carnival Prep project from 30th Jan to the 27th Feb! I'm travelling with my sister and her boyfriend and we are so excited! Trying to get all our things together, also doing another 2 1/2 months travelling south america after the project so have lots to sort out. We will be staying at a homestay in Rio...not sure if any more of you will be too?

    Looking forward to getting there at last and meeting everyone! :)
