Adventure travel guide to the USA

Canyons, mountains and rugged landscapes galore, the USA's natural diversity makes it a great destination for adventure travellers!

The USA might not have the rugged charm of South America or the oriental flare of Asia, but it sure does do adventure well! In fact, it's the adventure traveller's playground. It's got snow and mountains, sun and sea and a whole lot more. So whatever kind of adventure activity you're looking for, you'll find it here.

The USA is a big place and every state is packed full of adventure. So there's no way we could fit it all into this short guide. However, you'll find all the best adventures in here and that'll make it a little bit easier to plan your trip around them. And of course, if you find any more along the way – well that's just a bonus!

The Grand Canyon

If you're looking for adventure, the most logical place to start is The Grand Canyon. It's a magnificent natural landmark and that makes it the perfect place for adventure activities. The fast flowing waters offer a range of wet and wild adventures. You could jump on a dory, try out one of motorised rafts or even have a go at canoeing – the choice is yours.

Needless to say, the white water rafting in this stunning location is simply incredible. Expect thrills galore on the 277 mile river run that's become so popular with travellers. You'll be speeding down it in a robust rubber boat with the water spraying up at you from every direction. Make sure you shop around because there are loads of adventure companies in the area and you can get a great price if you find the right one.

If you don't fancy getting wet, how about a nice hiking trip? You can combine sightseeing with a spot of exercise and you'll find yourself with a really unique view of The Grand Canyon. Finally, it's not exactly an activity, but walking round The Grand Canyon Skywalk is as nerve racking as the best adventure – so it's well worth a mention.

The Colorado Mountains

The word mountain is almost an invitation for adventure travellers. It hints of trekking, climbing, skiing and more. So it's hardly surprising that The Colorado Mountains are a real hit with thrill seekers. The trekking and climbing opportunities are endless, with routes stretching up into the sky. But that's only the beginning. When the snow fall, the ski season kicks in and there are all sorts of winter adventures to be had here. Snowboarding, skiing, sledging – you name it, you can do it here!

And in the summer, you might want to cool off with a spot of white water rafting. The Colorado Mountains offer some fabulous rafting opportunities and the rapids here are rumoured to be some of the best in the world. And because there's something for every level, you'll always find a route to suit.

Hawaii

Oh yes – there are adventures in Hawaii! It's famed for it's stunning beaches, crystal clear waters and hula dancers, but there's more to this tropical paradise than meets the eye. Head for Kauai, a mystical jungle island where the hiking is as amazing as the scenery. You'll want to do The Kalalau Trail. It's 10 miles long and takes you through 5 valleys – each of which will give you a new perspective on this stunning destination. Don't be fooled though, this heavenly trek is beautiful but it's not easy – so a little preparation certainly won't go amiss.

And then there's the surfing! Where better to have a go at this fun-filled sport than in Hawaii! Our insider tips tell us that the best beach to visit is Sunset Beach on the North Shore. It's only too tempting to throw a bit of surfing-speak at you now, but we'll resist. Sufficed to say – you'll find the kind of waves here that you thought only existed in movies.
