The Travel and Leisure website has announced its pick of the world’s top ten scariest runways.
Coming first is the Paro Airport runway in Bhutan, which is described as being "tucked tightly into a cropped valley and surrounded by 16,000-foot-high Himalayan peaks".
Second place was awarded to the Princess Juliana International Airport in St Maarten. It is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean and jets fly low over a local beach.
Regan International airport in Washington DC comes third, as "on taking off, pilots need to climb quickly and execute a steep left bank to avoid flying over the White House."
Also noted for their "scary" runways are Gibraltar Airport, Scotland’s Barra Airport, JFK Airport and Madeira Airport.
In related news, passengers were left stranded last week after the cabin crew of airline Lufthansa staged a strike in Germany over pay conditions.
