A young woman from the US has spoken to one newspaper about her experience of volunteering abroad.
Michelle Miller gave up her legal recruitment job in New York and embarked upon a two-year volunteering abroad project with the Peace Corps in the Eastern European country of Moldova.
Following a training spell, during which she was trained in the local language, Ms Miller moved to Cahul in Moldova where she stayed with a host mother, became accustomed with traditions and learned a different way of life.
Ms Miller enjoyed the fertile countryside of Moldova as well as working with communities. She created and co-directed community development projects, as well as helping to raise funds for the Association of Single Parent Families.
In related news, the Allied Press last week reported on the story of 69-year-old Mary Morwood of New Zealand, who claims to be addicted to volunteering abroad and has travelled to Sri Lanka and Tibet to lend her help to refugees.
