One expert has highlighted the benefits of embarking upon volunteering abroad projects.
According to Dorothy Gibson of Europe Direct North East, volunteering abroad "gives enthusiastic young people an informal, real life international learning experience".
Ms Gibson was speaking to the Northern Echo ahead of an organised event designed to inform young people about potential volunteering abroad opportunities.
She continued that volunteering abroad is "a great way to broaden their [young adults’] knowledge of other cultures".
Furthermore, it may reflect positively upon them in future job interviews, she added, as it may "increase their prospects and make a real difference to local communities."
Those who are interested in working with children may like to consider taking a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) course, which enables participants to earn money while travelling abroad.
Travel for i-to-i recently suggested that such courses could provide a period of relief to those seeking a break abroad from the current recession in the UK.
