Volunteer abroad, graduates urged

Posted 25 Feb 2010

Volunteer abroad, graduates urged Volunteering abroad has been earmarked as a worthy self-developing endeavour for recent graduates.

Canadian career advisor Jason Connell, who has himself volunteered in China, South Africa and Uganda, praised the benefits of such a trip as rewarding for the self and others, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Recent social networking phenomena have made fundraising for a volunteering stint that little bit easier, he added.

He encouraged people to partake in such an event by explaining the importance of helping those less fortunate, stating: "Volunteering matters because the world is plagued with too much suffering and it’s not necessary."

Mr Connell believes the current economic situation and difficult job market makes now the perfect time to offer help to people abroad.

The plea comes after a recent story emerged of a fellow Canadian woman who claimed to have found "overwhelming happiness" by volunteering at an African pre-school following the death of her husband.
