Gap year travellers and other holidaymakers in Sydney are being encouraged to support a greener future for the city, after officials handed out 2,030 free trees.
The native seedlings, which were also given to residents, included eucalypts, bottlebrush and wattles.
Lord mayor Clover Moore said cities are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases and inspiring locals and tourists to plant trees could potentially help towards a greener future.
"More trees and greenery in our gardens, backyards, streets and parks will help us get there and this giveaway is part of inviting people to join us," he explained.
The move could see the city become popular with those seeking sustainable travel, with Ms Moore stating Sydney is targeting carbon reductions of 70 per cent by 2030.
Authorities have already made attempts to reduce emissions from vehicles, with the City of Sydney local government cutting its fleet of 600 motors to 450, as well as moving to more eco-friendly fuels.
