Travellers ‘could go further afield’ in Australia

Posted 28 May 2010

Travellers ''could go further afield'' in Australia Individuals trekking across Australia on their gap year might want to venture off the beaten track to unearth some of the country’s hidden gems.

Away from the large cities and tourist spots, there are many relatively unknown destinations, according to Australian Sky.

For wildlife lovers, there is Kangaroo Island, which lets visitors get up close and personal with the animals.

It is home to "the widest range of free-roaming native animals anywhere in Australia" and includes sea lions, platypus, possums and bandicoots, as well as more than 255 different species of bird.

The Mereenie Loop, on the other hand, offers the chance to experience the great outdoors and it is a road that heads through Aboriginal-owned territory and passes MacDonnell Ranges and West MacDonnell National Park.

Kami Ramini recently posted on Suite101.com that Western Australia has many attractions for gap year travellers to visit, including the waterfronts of Yardle Creek and the gorges of Cape Range National Park.
