Gap year travellers planning a trip to Asia might be pleased to learn that the continent has been named as the travel industry area best equipped to successfully emerge from the recent economic downturn.
According to travel facilitator Abacus International, 2010 is shaping up to be a positive year for Asia, thanks in part to strong foundations laid down toward the end of 2009.
Robert Bailey, Abacus International president, noted that the tail-end of last year produced some "better than expected" results.
He said: "The travel industry had seen some of the most difficult times in the past year, but the green shoots we saw in the second half of the year continued to grow."
The news follows recent comments by Josephine Huang, marketing manager of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, who suggested gap year travellers might like to visit the country and use it as an introduction to Asia.
