Tibet ‘to be re-opened to tourists in April’

Posted 30 Mar 2009

Tibet ''to be re-opened to tourists in April'' Tibet will be reopened to tourists and gap year travellers as of April 5th, according to an official.

The country, which is known for its unique cultures, traditions and breathtaking landscapes, has been closed to tourists in recent times as the 50th anniversary of a failed uprising led by the Dalai Lama approached.

However, it appears that China now deems any possibility of unrest unlikely and will allow tourists to gain entry to the region early next month, according to Bachug, head of tourism for Tibet.

He revealed that the closure was for the safety of travellers, but Tibet is now "harmonious and safe" and "travel agencies, tourist resorts and hotels are well-prepared for tourists".

Those wishing to visit Tibet during their gap years abroad have to first gain permission from the police, though there are stricter rules in place for journalists and diplomats, according to the Times.
