''Take part'' in an Australian challenge Active travellers considering a trip to Australia in the coming months might want to pencil in a water-based challenge that is taking place.

The Avon Descent will be happening on the Avon and Swan rivers in Western Australia between August 7th and 8th, Austravel has revealed.

It attracts both participants and spectators from all across the globe.

A variety of power and peddle craft will be taking to the waters to compete in the challenge, which promises to be an "exhilarating two-day time trial over 134 gruelling kilometres".

The race, which was first held in 1973 with 49 competitors and had no officials or rules, has since seen around 25,000 people battle it out on the waves, "from novices and families, to world and Olympic champions".

Daily Telegraph journalist Mark Chipperfield recently extolled the virtues of Brisbane in Australia, labelling it a "fast-paced metropolis" that is ideal for enthusiastic partygoers.
