''Take a career break'' by volunteering abroad People thinking of taking a career break may well be interested to hear that the idea has recently experienced a surge in popularity.

The Irish Times reports that aid companies have been overwhelmed by the numbers of people who have offered to spare their time in order to help with the Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

For many people, heading overseas to volunteer is a way to take a step back and consider what they want from their life and career, while still giving something back.

Ian O’Sullivan, director of i-to-i in Ireland, explained that it is not just students and young people who now want to volunteer abroad.

"It’s a whole cross-section of people trying out these experiences," he stated.

Kerry Watson, from Burton in England, recently took a break from work to help set up an orphanage in Kenya after previously spending a short time volunteering in the country in 2007.
