Students can enrich their CVs and make themselves more attractive to prospective employers by taking a short gap year – or 'snap year' – according to one expert.
Travel editor at Lonely Planet Tom Hall claims that there are several destinations currently proving popular for this type of trip, such as south-east Asia, India and Nepal.
He explains that these locations offer great value to those travelling on a budget.
"Indonesia is another destination that's attracting more visitors than it has for a few years, who are venturing beyond Bali to islands further east to meet Komodo dragons and leave the crowds behind," comments Mr Hall.
Adding that an unusual gap year can look good on CVs, he suggests that activities such as hiking and cycling are a great way to explore a country – and to cut back on spending at the same time.
Recently, career psychologist with amazingpeople.co.uk Denise Taylor stated that employers are seeking candidates with transferable skills that are not necessarily gained from a university course, such as communication and teamwork.
Students may find themselves gaining these kinds of qualities during a gap year experience.
