Posted 30 Mar 2010

Sri Lanka ''could be ideal'' for gap year travellers Sri Lanka could be an ideal place to visit for those on a gap year as the country has been praised by a number of publications.

The land has been described as being on a "global media roll" by Sri Lanka Tourism, which has listed the outlets extolling its offerings.

It has been named the second best destination in the world by National Geographic, the tourist board announced.

Working for the magazine, travel writer Jill Crawshaw said: "Sri Lanka has got absolutely everything."

Lyn Hughes, editor of Wanderlust magazine, meanwhile, described the nation as one of the "greatest" islands in the world.

The New York Times recently reported that the spot was at the top of a list of the 31 places to go in 2010, as it feels like "one big tropical zoo".

Sanjika Perera, UK and Ireland director of the Sri Lankan Tourism Promotion Bureau, recently said that the country has seen a resurgence in visitors since fighting ended there last year.
