''Special police force'' to set up home in Bangkok airport As part of plans to make Suvarnabhumi International Airport a safer place for travellers, the hub is to receive its own police force to increase security in and around the base – news that may be welcomed by those about to head out for a gap year in Thailand.

The heightened safety measures will mean that baggage thieves and scammers operating at the hub will be targeted by the team of police, which will comprise of around 280 extra officers.

"If we have a Suvarnabhumi police station to take charge of the airport, bad people roaming around should finally disappear," the Bangkok Post quotes Airports of Thailand president Serirat Prasutanond as saying.

In early September, the newspaper reported that efforts to crack down on illegal activity at Suvarnabhumi Airport had been successful as police arrested 750 illegal taxi and limousine drivers and 405 unauthorised tour guides at the hub within the space of one month.
