South Africa ''favourite place for long-term expats'' In a discovery that those on a gap year in South Africa may understand, the country is the most popular settling place for those moving abroad.

This is according to the outcome of the HSBC International Expat Survey, which found that 58 per cent of those questioned have lived abroad for five years or more.

South Africa was found to be home to 73 per cent of those who have lived abroad for more than five years, while 82 per cent of expats in Thailand have been soaking up the sun in the Asian country for the same amount of time.

On average, 74 per cent of expats return home at least once a year, with those in Brazil – 94 per cent – the most likely to make the journey home annually.

Meanwhile, those in South Africa for the World Cup next year have been urged to take care when around baboons, as they are becoming increasingly adept at pilfering food and belongings from tourists, it was reported last week.
