Olympic gold medalist Sir Chris Hoy considers his most successful holiday to have been in Thailand – a country also popular with those taking gap years and volunteering abroad.
The cyclist, who did Britain proud at last year’s Beijing Olympics by bagging no less than three gold medals, said that after a summer and autumn of solid press appearances following the event, Thailand proved to be the perfect antidote.
He described the trip to Sala in Phuket last December as "really special".
"It’s lovely and quiet with great food and is set in the most perfect location. I only had one day off in 18 months, so to be free every day felt great," he explained.
Hoy, who hails from Edinburgh, was knighted in June this year. He became the first Brit in 100 years to win three gold medals at one Olympic games event after his achievements in the team sprint, men’s sprint and Keirin.
