Shipwreck museum opens in the Dominican Republic

Posted 29 Sep 2010

Shipwreck museum opens in the Dominican Republic Gap year travellers heading to the Dominican Republic will be able to visit a brand new attraction that opened this month.

The Deep Blue Marine museum is home to numerous artefacts that have been recovered from shipwrecks in the waters around the island nation.

Located in the city of Samana, the exhibit features objects from the French warship Le Scipion, which fought in the American War of Independence.

Samana Bay is a popular area for cruise ships, so the museum is likely to be a hit with tourists discovering the Dominican Republic's oceanographic history.

As well as a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory, the museum will also house a gift shop where travellers can purchase mementos of their time in the country.

Of course the Deep Blue Marine attraction is not the only museum in the Dominican Republic and backpackers will find plenty to fulfil their cultural desires.

There is the Tobacco Museum in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Regional Museum of Archaeology in La Romana and the Museum of the Royal Houses in Santo Domingo to name a few.
