Would-be travellers considering a gap year in Nigeria have been advised of some of the best places to go while in the country.
Lizzie Williams – guidebook author who has written for Bradt on Johannesburg and Nigeria – suggested heading to the Oshogbo Sacred Forest, which she described as a "weird and wonderful place".
Apparently, there are some unique sculptures to be found here, made 50 years ago by Suzanne Wenger.
She also recommended going to the city of Kano, home to some mosques, ancient markets and great museums.
"Calabar in the south has yet another distinct character and is surprisingly clean, friendly and pleasant to visit, with views of the Calabar River and the best museum in Nigeria," Ms Williams remarked.
There is also a great beach here, at the mouth of the Calabar River. Holidaymakers keen to get off the beaten track and relax on the sand in seclusion should make their way to this part of Nigeria.
