Gap year travellers hoping to see in the new year in an exciting and memorable place could perhaps head to Everest's base camp in Nepal.
In an article for TravelBite.co.uk, writer Emma Field listed a trek in the Himalayas as one of the best ways to welcome in 2011.
She pointed out that reaching base camp is no easy feat, so those unaccustomed to hiking may be better off going elsewhere.
But for adventurous types who are up for the challenge, a journey through Nepal's mountainous region will be a remarkable way to spend the festive season.
"The best views of Mount Everest will be from the peak of Kala Pattar on December 30th," claimed Ms Field.
"Unfortunately a day too early to count as the New Year's Eve event, but the memory of that awe-inspiring panorama will stick with you for many, many years to come."
Nepal's Everest base camp is located at an altitude of 17,590 feet.
