Finance firm KPMG has suggested the possibility of a sabbatical to its UK employees as the recession kicks in and many firms strive to avoid making redundancies.
The organisation has offered 11,000 of its British staff the chance to take a sabbatical on 30 per cent of their usual wage or switch to a four-day working week as it attempts to ride out the economic crisis.
"The move gives us flexibility to manage the workforce. It helps us to avoid the need of making redundancies," a spokesman for the firm explained.
Employees in Europe may also be offered the same option in the future, he added.
Meanwhile, MLive.com reported on one optometrist who, after volunteering abroad in Peru, decided to go back three times and help those suffering from visual impairments.
