Budding volunteers abroad may like to draw inspiration from a group of high school students in the US, who are raising funds to contribute to developments in Kenya.
The pupils, from Reagan High School in Austin, Texas, are hoping to go on a two-week scheme to Kibera, one of the country’s largest slums, KVUE.com reported.
Compelled to make the trip after watching a teenage Kenyan girl plead for help in an awareness video, the participants will each need to raise in the region of $2,600 (£1,700) to take part.
They will also be required to finish school, pass all of their classes and contribute in the community to be allowed on the journey.
Rikki Dautel, a mentor working with the students, said the volunteers will be expected to lead sports camps, organise talent shows and tutor children once in Africa.
Last month, the Burton Mail reported that Kerry Watson – a British woman who volunteered in Kenya in 2007 – had since decided to set up an orphanage in the country.
