A trip to the Colca Canyon in Peru is a must for any gap year travellers visiting the country, it has been suggested.
In an article for the online travel guide BootsnAll, writer Adam Seper explained that it is the deepest canyon in the world – twice the depth of the Grand Canyon.
"The ruggedness of Colca is a sight to behold, and the fact that there are families, communities and even churches at the bottom of the canyon is one of the most impressive things about descending below the rim here," he remarked.
Travellers can also catch a glimpse of the condor – one of the biggest birds in the world – in the Colca Canyon.
Mr Seper said that while the altitude can be a problem for some people, anyone should be able to hike in the area, provided they acclimiatise first.
He pointed out that the Colca Canyon can be visited all year round and treks can be spread over two days or three.
