The island of Penang in the north of Malaysia has been named as one of the best in the world.
Penang was honoured at the Travel and Leisure 2008 World’s Best Awards, with judges commending the island for its affordability and range of visitor attractions.
Speaking this week, Shahrin Mokhtar, director of Tourism Malaysia Sydney, said he was delighted that the island had gained recognition.
"Penang has long stood as a top holiday destination among travellers to Malaysia due to its rich history of food and unique architecture," he commented.
Mr Mokhtar described the island as an ideal destination for travellers of all ages and said there are activities and accommodation to suit most budgets.
Other islands which were named among the world’s best include Bali, Maui, Tasmania and Hawaii.
