According to new figures from the US Peace Corps, increasing numbers of people from the state of Florida are choosing to embark upon volunteering broad projects.
In the US, the number of people volunteering abroad for the Peace Corps rose by 16 per cent last year compared to 2007.
However, in Florida, 35 per cent more people volunteered abroad in 2008, reported the North Fort Myers Neighbor.
Those who choose to participate in volunteering abroad projects with the US Peace Corps could be sent to one of 76 developing countries to work in sectors such as healthcare, business and teaching.
Public affairs specialist for the Peace Corps Dave Leavitt stated: "It is heartening that so many Floridians today are embracing national service to help others around the world."
Those who are considering volunteering abroad may like to browse through the programmes on offer through gap year specialist I-to-I. A range of opportunities, such as observing Orangutans in Borneo or looking after lion cubs in South Africa, are available through the organisation.
