Overseas travel is becoming more popular, according to new research, which shows that there is a sizeable difference between the number of Generation Y and Baby Boomers who visited foreign countries in their youth.
Published by the Post Office, the study reveals that on average a member of Generation Y will have had three times as many travel experiences abroad as children than their parents.
Of these, some 17 per cent visited Africa and four per cent went to Central America.
While the arrival of package holidays and charter flights may have helped to bring about this change, the upswing in foreign travel could inspire more youngsters to discover the world on a gap year adventure.
Indeed, recently students who have missed out on a university place have been encouraged to obtain a Working Holiday Visa and spend some time in New Zealand or Australia.
Immigration New Zealand and Tourism Australia have both extolled the benefits of such trips, highlighting that this way travellers can earn while they explore.
