Gap year travellers heading to India might want to make their way to a northern province as it has been recommended by a journalist.
Suite101.com contributor Suzanna Hulmes has highlighted the region of Varanassi as one that is ideal for adventurers.
It offers "a great many sights and scintillating experiences", the writer explained.
The area is located in Uttar Pradesh and is a "chaotic and vibrant city", where intrepid explorers should find plenty to keep them occupied.
One of the main attractions of Varanasi is the Ghats, which are steps that lead down to the River Ganges and head out along the entire waterfront of the town.
A "unique and intimate" feature of the destination is the site of the Burning Bodies, which is an open-air cremation site where Hindus believe they will reach enlightenment if they die there.
Tourists in India might like to catch a glimpse of the Holy Festival of Colour, in which locals hurl coloured powder and water at one another.
