Newspapers “a powerful tool” to teach English

Posted 11 Dec 2008

Newspapers can be used in an effective way to improve the quality of teaching languages, Sri Lanka’s national publication has suggested.

Changes have been made to enhance the quality of teaching English in Sri Lanka but modern technology has been introduced slowly, Rohana Andaraweeera said in an article for the Daily News.

Technology is only available in some schools, so the writer suggests that teachers should use resources which are readily available to them, including newspapers.

She said that this cheap teaching aid can provide an enormous amount of text and information for students to use in a number of different language activities.

Possible ways that they can be used in the classroom, as well as translation, include putting information from news stories into quizzes and analysing the content to teach students about current issues.

Those who have completed a TEFL course might want to consider these ideas when they start to teach English abroad.

As well as teaching, travellers who visit the Indian Ocean island can get involved in community and conservation work.ADNFCR-1944-ID-18924988-ADNFCR
