New skills could “lead to a refreshing career change”

Posted 15 Dec 2008

Although UK workers might be worried about what effect the economy will have on their job, many are seeing it as a chance to develop their expertise and improve their career prospects, a survey has revealed.

The report, conducted on behalf of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), investigated how workers felt about their employment safety and any attitude changes towards career aspirations.

Over half of respondents said the state of the economy has made them concerned about their job security.

But three-quarters recognised there was room for improvement in their ability as an employee and nearly half said they were considering training or learning a new skill to safeguard their job and open up new career opportunities.

Chris Banks, chairman of the LSC, said: "Learning new skills and retraining can lead to a refreshing career change."

Completing a TEFL course is one possible way people could learn new skills and it could lead to a job teaching English abroad.

The LSC is a non-departmental public body and aims to improve the skills of people in England so they can become more competitive in the workforce.ADNFCR-1944-ID-18930363-ADNFCR
