A growing number of teachers in New Zealand are leaving to further their careers overseas, it has been revealed.
According to official figures, more than 4,300 teachers left the profession during the year to May 2008.
Many of these were said to be taking on similar roles in other countries, with the Middle East proving to be an especially popular location, the Dominion Post reports.
However, the recruiting of newly-qualified teachers meant that the overall number of people in the profession in New Zealand remained steady.
Indeed, many of the people taking on teaching roles within the country were themselves said to hail from foreign countries.
In addition, some new recruits were returning expats who have been working abroad for some time.
The release of the figures coincides with International World Teachers’ Day, which is being marked with a special conference in New Zealand.
