A new guide for graduates on the possibilities open to them once they hang up their black gowns and caps has been put together by the government, it has emerged.
Devised jointly with the National Union of Students (NUS), the guides contain information on how to secure work in different countries and apply for work experience and internships.
It also gives advice on volunteering abroad and at home and choosing further study.
John Denham, the skills secretary, explained: "In the current economic climate it’s natural that students are considering their options even more closely and that’s why we want to provide as much information as possible about the opportunities available to students."
Taking a gap year or signing up to volunteer abroad are two of the options open to youngsters and among the high-profile figures to have chosen this route is the princess of York Eugenie Ferguson, who recently visited Thailand as part of her trip.
