In news that may be of interest to adventurers planning a gap year to Nepal, Oxfam has warned that millions of the country’s citizens may have less food in the future due to climate change.
According to a report from the organisation, rivers in Nepal are rapidly drying out and harvests with low yields are becoming more common, the BBC reports.
If the problem persists, it adds, millions of Nepalese people currently living in poverty will have greater pressures heaped upon them – including hunger and water shortages.
A representative from Oxfam Prabin Man Singh told the news provider: "The people living in the rural areas were already having lots of problems in their livelihoods. But with the climate change, the whole scenario, the whole struggle of their survival has been exaggerated."
Meanwhile, the Nepal Tourist Board revealed earlier this month that the number of visitors and gap year travellers flying into the country rose by ten per cent in July 2009 compared to June.
