Mum checks in on gap year in Nepal

Posted 29 Oct 2009

Mum checks in on gap year in Nepal British mum Jo Thompson, whose gap year abroad is being documented by the Telegraph, is currently exploring the Asian country of Nepal, it has emerged.

Ms Thompson has been sitting "in a safari tent, high above the Himalayan Mountains, listening to the noise of a rushing canyon and cicadas," she writes in the publication.

This, she explains, is a far cry from pushing a vacuum cleaner, cleaning toilets, driving around and cooking – all things she would be doing as part of her everyday life in the UK.

Some of the activities she has taken part in include riding on a boat on the Himalayan rapids, planting potatoes at an orphanage, flying around Everest on a plane and walking across a bridge suspended over a 520-foot drop.

Ms Thompson’s writings on Nepal come after the spokesperson for Saga Holiday Paul Green highlighted that the country is particularly popular among gap year travellers aged 50 and over.
