The number of international visitors heading to Asia and Pacific destinations showed a four per cent year-on-year increase in May, it has been revealed.
Figures from the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) demonstrated that south Asia and south-east Asia experienced the greatest growth for the month – and are leading the way for 2011 so far.
Indeed, the association divulged that during the first five months of this year, south Asia boosted its visitor arrivals by some 15 per cent, while south-east Asia enjoyed increases of 12 per cent.
Gap year travellers could be among those flocking to the locations, with destinations such as Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam proving particularly popular.
Earlier this year Sri Lanka's desirability was highlighted by Professor G L Peiris – the country's external affairs minister – who claimed that Britons are the second largest group of visitors to the nation.
