Offering travellers the chance to explore historical sites and enjoy a "relaxed and friendly atmosphere", Mombasa could be a good destination for gap year students to add to their itineraries.
According to the UK director of the Kenya Tourist Board Angie Sloan, Mombasa is a year-round destination with consistently warm weather and great beaches.
She explains that the location is the oldest harbour in east Africa – and that its Old Town offers the chance to discover the rich local history.
"The coastline south of Mombasa is a tropical paradise of palm-fringed white sand beaches, turquoise waters and beautiful coral reefs, myriad fish, sea turtles and dolphins," Ms Sloan adds.
Gap year travellers may therefore find this is a good place to go diving.
Last month, Fort Jesus was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status – a site which Ms Sloan has previously described as an attraction that visitors to Mombasa must go to see.
