The Malaysian tourist board has revealed that the country is avoiding the negative effects of the global recession and continues to welcome holidaymakers, gap year travellers and those on sabbaticals from countries such as the US.
According to Salahuddin Mohd Ariffin, vice president and director of Tourism Malaysia, the number of US tourists entering the country in 2008 rose by nine per cent compared to 2007.
"Penang remains the favourite destination for Americans, followed by Sabah, known for its diving, golfing and green tourism," Bernama quotes him as saying.
Furthermore, the representative highlighted that at a recent New York travel conference, there was a high level of interest in responsible travel in Malaysia.
Malaysia boasts some fantastic scenery, including sprawling beaches and rainforests, as well as encompassing the island of Borneo, where volunteering abroad could bring the opportunity of working with the region’s famous orangutans.
